relativistic total energy (Definition)

The relativistic total energy E of a particle is defined as

$\displaystyle E = \frac{mc^2}{\sqrt{1-v^2/c^2}}$ (1)

One often finds this relationship in the limit of low speeds $(v << c)$ with the famous equation

$\displaystyle E_0 = mc^2$ (2)
