scalar triple product

(Definition)

Scalar Triple Product

The scalar triple product is

|----------------------|
[u,v,-w-] =-(u-×-v-) ⋅ w.                            (1)

Its absolute value equals the volume of the parallelepiped generated by the three vectors:

V  = |[u, v,w ]|.

Its sign records orientation relative to a right-handed basis.

Figure 18, modernized: scalar triple product as oriented parallelepiped volume.

The scalar triple product is invariant under cyclic permutation:

(u × v) ⋅ w = (v × w ) ⋅ u = (w × u ) ⋅ v,

and changes sign under exchange of any two vectors.

In Cartesian components,

|----------------------------|
|              ||u    u   u  || |
|              || x   y    z|| |
|(u × v) ⋅ w = |vx  vy   vz|.|                          (2)
---------------|wx---wy--wz-|--

Therefore nonzero vectors u,v,w are coplanar exactly when their scalar triple product vanishes.

Example 1: volume

For

A  = (− 3,1,2), B = (− 1,0,− 2), C =  (2,1,4), D = (2,− 3,1),

Brand obtains

 −→    − →   −−→
(AB  × AC  ) ⋅AD  = 81.

Thus the parallelepiped volume is 81, and the tetrahedron volume is 81∕6 = 13.5.

Example 2: line-plane intersection

If a line is

r = rA + λd

and a plane through C,D,E has Normal

n =  (rD − rC) × (rE − rC),

then the intersection parameter is

|------------------|
|    (rC − rA ) ⋅ n|
|λ = -------------.|
---------d-⋅ n------

For Brand’s data A = (1, 2, 1), B = (2, 1, 2), C = (0,−4, 4), D = (2,−2, 2), E = (4, 1, 2), this gives λ = 2 and

P  = (3,0,3).
