- Abstract:
- A sequence of graduate-level 44 lectures at Harvard University on group theory applications in quantum mechanics of atoms, molecules and solids; "develops the aspects of group theory most relevant to quantum physics and quantum chemistry". A very clear and easy to read textbook addressed mostly to students of quantum physics and solids, or mathematical readers who'd like to understand how group theory is applied to quantum phyisics problems. The mathematical concepts and results are condensed in three chapters on group theory and group representations; numerous examples are presented in a physical/theoretical physics context for: group representations, symmetry groups, quantum physics, quantum molecular structure, and more. The last five of the eight chapters deal with quantum physics applications of groups, including also a 14-page Appendix on vector spaces, matrix algebra, and character tables of point-symmetry groups. It contains several exercises, tables and figures that are very helpful in consolidating the topics covered in this essential textbook for beginning to intermediate level group applications to solving quantum physics problems. (This is an unabridged republication of the edition published by the McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, 1964.) http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=130006
