Great question!

E = mc^2 is not the whole picture, just the rest energy which holds if the particle's velocity is significantly smaller than the speed of light v << c,  the Total relativistic energy is

E=mc^2/sqrt(1 - v^2/c^2)

if you look at the kinetic energy

K = mc^2/sqrt(1 - v^2/c^2) - mc^2

you see that as v -> c, K -> infinity so you won't go faster than speed of light
