``Re: Lorentz Force Law'' by bloftin on 2008-09-08 19:35:57
The current state of the Lorentz Force law entry is by no means finished, but I simply put it in as a starting stub (note anybody can edit it to improve it).  I am working on an article for Thomson's charge to mass ratio for the electron, which utilizes the Lorentz Force so I've just put it in more for a reminder that we need an article about it.

"The recent entry for the Lorentz Force Law illustrates why physics teaching is failing:"

I would hardly say that this pitiful entry can be related to a failing in physics teaching, that would have to be the teachers/institution.

Now you bring up a very valid point and exactly why I started PlanetPhysics.  The problem is that everybody has a different level of knowledge, but when someone lectures or writes a section in a textbook, they must make an assumption about the reader/listener's level of knowledge.  On one side, why should I have to waste my time with details that another needs and on the other side I cannot understand the lecture/article without someone explaining some of the assumed topics.  So we have a clear conflict and the hope is that someday when PlanetPhysics has a big enough body of knowledge we solve the problem through a multiresolution hyperlink approach.  As an example, if I am reading through the charge to mass experiment and it just references the Lorentz Force Law, the reader who knows it continues on with the article and the reader who is unfamiliar with the law can follow the link and everybody can learn at their own pace.

The current state of PlanetPhysics does not lend itself to teaching because we still don't have enough articles, but we can't attract any contributors until we have some content.  Therefore, I have taken the approach to have some articles well detailed while others not so much hoping others might pick up some of the workload.  If you have the capability by all means please fill in everything you know about the Lorentz Force Law.

So to me this article is just reminding me of the equation that I need for something else and is not complete.
