The time independent Schroedinger equation in spherical polars is simpler and more intuitive, if written with the angular momentum operator, as follows:
\[
\frac{-\hbar^2}{2m} \left( \frac{1}{r^2} \frac{\partial}{\partial r}\left( r^2 \frac{\partial}{\partial r} \right)   + \frac{1}{2m} \frac{\hat{L^2}}{r^2}  + V(r)\right)\psi = E\psi
\]

This explicitly shows the angular dependence of the second term, and it is hence easier to develop the separable solution. If you'd like to open up the article access I'd be happy to add this point myself.
